1. Parlami un po’ di te… chi sei, dove vivi, quanti anni hai e gli studi che hai fatto…

1. Tell me something about yourself… Who are you, where do you live, how old are you, what did you study (at university)?

Sono un giovane designer di Helsinki che si è laureato la scorsa primavera alla Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences come industrial designer. Ho trascorso la mia infanzia con mio padre e mio nonno che sono lavoratori del legno costruendo di un sacco di cose, da strumenti musicali a catapulte. Da allora il legno come materiale che più è stato vicino al mio cuore.


I’m a young Helsinki based designer who graduated last spring from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as an industrial designer. I spent my childhood at my fathers and grandfathers woodworkshops building all kinds of things from musical instruments to catapults. Since then wood as a material has been close to my heart.

2. Cos’è per te il design?

2. What does design mean to you?

Ho ancora difficoltà a vedere il design come lavoro, perché per me si tratta di divertimento, gioia e piacere.


I’m still having a hard time seeing design as work, because for me it’s about fun, joy and pleasure.

3. Qual è la tua filosofia per la progettazione degli oggetti?

3. Do you have a personal design philosophy? How would you describe it?

La mia filosofia di design personale è davvero molto semplice, guardo le cose intorno a me e mi chiedo la domanda: “Perché?”.

My personal design philosophy is really quite simple, I look at things around me and ask myself the question: ”Why?”.

4. Quali sono i materiali che preferisci?

4. Which materials do you use the most in your projects?

Come ho già detto mi piace tutto ciò che riguarda il legno, l’odore, il suo aspetto e il fatto che si tratta di un materiale che vive. Mi piace usare materiali “onesti” come metalli, vetro, ceramica, ecc… La plastica non è uno di loro.

As I mentioned I love everything about wood, the smell, its looks and the fact that it’s a material that lives. I like to use ”honest” materials like metals, glass, ceramics etc. Plastic is not one of them.

5. Tell me something about the objects you have sent me…

Myllymäki è un pezzo modulare del design, esposto a Milano Design Week di quest’anno. Deve il suo nome della zona ho vissuto in tutta la mia infanzia e la gioventù. È possibile raccogliere diversi moduli e costruire il proprio blocco quartiere. Myllymäki è un omaggio alla casa. Kontio è stata esposta a Milano Design Week lo scorso anno in Salone Satellite. È una lampada da tavolo che ha quattro piani, tagliare in diverse angolazioni in modo da poter dirigere la luce cambiando il piano di fondo. E ‘una lampada che deve letteralmente essere toccata. Kelmi è una lampada da tavolo realizzata in lamiera e acrilico. Durante la progettazione di esso, sono stato ispirato da quelle vecchie lampade di scuola e quando si sta guardando Kelmi da dritto, vedrete la forma della storia. Non è una luce giocosa ad essere immessi sul tavolo o sul pavimento. E ‘un prodotto che ho progettato studiare la linea sottile tra giocoso e infantile.

Myllymäki is a modular piece of design, exhibited in Milan Design Week this year. It got its name of the area I lived in all my childhood and youth. You can collect different modules and build your own neighbourhood block. Myllymäki is a tribute to home. Kontio was exhibited in Milan Design Week last year in SaloneSatellite. It’s a table lamp that has four planes, cut in different angles so you can aim the light by changing the bottom plane. It’s a lamp that literally needs to be touched. Kelmi is a table lamp made of sheetmetal and acrylic. While designing it, I was inspired by those old school lamps and when you’re looking at Kelmi from straight ahead, you’ll see the shape of history. Dont is a playful light to be placed on table or floor. It’s a product I designed studying the subtle line between playful and childish.

6. Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

6. Do you already have any project for the future?

Al momento sto lavorando su un progetto davvero interessante in cui ho l’opportunità di progettare mobili per i bambini. Nel processo di progettazione che ho avuto l’opportunità di trascorrere il tempo con i bambini ed imparare da loro.

At the moment I’m working on a really interesting project in which I have the opportunity to design furnitures for kids. In the design process I have had the opportunity to spend time with kids and really learn from them. 

7. Quale oggetto del passato ti piacerebbe aver progettato?

7. Is there an object of the past that you wish you had designed?

Ci sono davvero molte e nuove cose stanno venendo fuori tutto il tempo. Fiskars forbici arancioni come un esempio.

There are really many and new things are coming out all the time.  Fiskars orange scissors as an example.

8. Alla premiazione degli Oscar Paolo Sorrentino ha citato il suo Pantheon di personaggi che hanno ispirato la sua vita, fra i quali Fellini e Maradona. Tu chi inseriresti nel tuo Pantheon?

8. Paolo Sorrentino during his ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Acceptance speech appointed Fellini, Madonna and Scorsese as their inspirers. Do you have any? Who are they?

Non mi ispiro ad altri designer. Ho la mia ispirazione dalla vita quotidiana, in tutte le sue forme.

I would have to say I’m really not that inspired by other designers in that kind of way. I get my inspiration from everyday life in its all forms.

9. Ritieni che l’autoproduzione dei propri pezzi sia la nuova via per i designers?

9. Do you think that self-production is a new possible way for designers to make their design?

Ho diverse offerte da questo tipo di società e penso che sia una equazione difficile. Ha molti punti deboli e io personalmente non mi piace trascorrere il mio tempo a fare la stessa cosa centinaia di volte.

I’ve got several offers from that kind of companies and I think it’s a hard equation. It has many weaknesses and I personally don’t like to spend my time making the same thing hundreds of times.

10. Qual è il tuo rapporto con la cucina? (Hai mai progettato oggetti per la cucina?)

10. Which kind of relationship do you have with the kitchen and cooking? (Have you ever designed kitchen tools?)

Abbiamo una divisione del lavoro con la mia ragazza nella nostra cucina. Trito le cose e lei fa il resto (io non sono il miglior cuoco per così dire). Ho progettato una serie di piatti in ceramica e alcuni coltelli.

We have a division of labour with my girlfriend in our kitchen. I chop things and she does the rest (I’m not the best cook so to say), so I am obviously into sharp things. I’ve designed a series of ceramic dishes and some knives.

11. Dimmi qual è la tua ricetta culinaria preferita.

11. Which recipe do you love the most?

In questo periodo dell’anno sono davvero in attesa di ottenere quelle nuove patate fresche nazionali (Finlandesi ricorda). Le patate vengono bollite e servite con aneto e burro. Aggiungete un po ‘di salmone e verdure fresche. Ricordate pane di segale con burro e latte come bevanda. Se possibile, il tutto servito in un cottage estivo.

At this time of the year I’m really waiting to get those fresh new domestic potatoes (Finland remember). Potatoes are boiled and served with dill and butter. Add some salmon and fresh vegetables. Remember rye bread with butter and milk as a drink. If possible all that is served in a summer cottage.
